  • Flowers of the dawn

  • Cartlands Tea Rooms, Kings Heath Park

A favourite building and set in the wonderful Kings Heath Park, the Horticultural College building  is a noted Kings Heath venue in itself with many creative activities taking place, especially in the Cartlands Tea Rooms.

I  have had many happy times there and felt this deserved to be celebrated

  • Highbury Road, Kings Heath

With a great perspective,  target-like  and straight lined, Highbury Road appealed to me. It has a range of housing with many architectural gems and is always busy with cars.  I  was especially drawn to the red Toyota, with its bright colour and made this prominent in the painting.

  • All Saints Road, Kings Heath

Painted in 2020, my intention was to capture life in Kings Heath during the Covid period.

At this time we were socially distancing and wearing masks.

The painting is a summer scene, however it has a sombre feel.

  • Psychedelic Tractor

  • Centenary Square

Over a long period of time, this space has evolved with buildings coming and going. This painting has three different buildings, the modern and futuristic library, the cl;accical Hall of Remembrance and Baskerville House which is a combination of both modern and classical architecture.

The library was a challenge to paint and took several attempts.

  • Scarborough, Open Top Bus

We have often been to Scarborough. The resort is one of the oldest in the country with a long history and some fantastic architecture.  I  wanted to show Scarborough from the point of view of a tourist. The painting concentrates on the sea front with no view of any sea.  I  wanted to solely concentrate on the build structure of the town.

  • Brindley Place

Canals have been a constant in my life although  I  have never owned a narrow boat.  I  really enjoy a long canal walk.

Brindley Place, set in the heart of Birmingham, was an ideal setting for a painting with plenty of buildings and activity on the water.

  • York Road, Kings Heath

  • Bournville, Evan’s Shop

Most people are fully aware of the basic history of Cadbury’s creation of Bournville, set up to house its workforce in an ideal community.

Evans shop is a well known and popular independent shop which has served the local community for many years.

I  usually paint summer scenes, however this painting is in winter. My wife Victoria is in the painting, looking at the shops.

  • Moseley Farmer's Market

  • Highbury Hall, Kings Heath

Home to the once Prime Minister, Joseph Chamberlain, the house has many interesting features and it was challenging to paint.

The quality of work and materials that are contained within the building are superior and show the builders skill.

  • Gunmakers Arms, Birmingham

Serving beer for over two hundred years, the Gunmakers Arms is a nice slice of Birmingham history. Originally armaments were made in the area.

I  painted the building in Flake White Hue and the car in Titanium White, which was a solution to the problem of painting white next to white.

  • Avenue Road Railway Bridge, Kings Heath

On most days  I  walk under this bridge.  I  think that it is an interesting part of Kings Heath. The bridge has art deco features and has been a part of the townscape for decades.

It fits well with the local environment and is complemented by trees and greenery.

  • Rubber Duck

I  have always had a fascination with tower cranes, their size and height dominate the city skylines. They appear to defy gravity.

This crane was in Silver Street, Kings Heath, helping to construct some retirement flats.
